چکیده

Osteopenia, or low bone density, is a chronic condition characterized by decreased calcification, density, and mass of bones, it represents a major health issue. Nutrition plays a key role in the prevention and management of this condition. Among different nutritional supplementation, curcumin is characterized by a wide spectrum of pharmacological activities, also with potential reference to the management of osteopenia. This review discusses current evidence supporting the use of curcumin supplementation in osteopenia. In multiple experimental studies on osteopenia models, curcumin reduced osteoclasts activity and promoted the action of osteoblasts, thus contributing to restore the physiological balance between these two cell populations which underlies the onset of osteopenia. However, curcumin in its native form presents poor pharmacokinetic properties which greatly limit the effectiveness of this supplementation in daily practice. To address this limitation, our group has developed Meriva®, a phytosome-based technology which ensures optimal pharmacokinetic and allows curcumin to exert its multiple effects. On these bases, we studied Meriva® also in the management of osteopenia in otherwise healthy subjects, showing improved bone health parameters already after few weeks of administration and without any side effect. These clinical findings represented the first evidence supporting the use of curcumin in the phytosome-form for the management of bone loss. Although larger studies are needed to further explore the effectiveness of curcumin in this condition, we believe that Meriva®, in combination with an appropriate lifestyle, may play a key role in the prevention and management of osteopenia in otherwise healthy subjects.

Inflammatory disorders alone or as a consequence of neurological disease affecting patients in life. Experimental models of inflammation are use to evaluate the production of inflammatory mediators at site of inflammation. Curcumin is one of the flavonoids possesses potent anti-inflammatory activity. However, because of low water solubility curcumin, its clinical application has been limited. T...

Curcumin as a bioactive compound: biological properties and encapsulation methods

Curcumin is a bioactive compound from turmeric which has different biological properties and health benefits such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anticancer activities. However, the low solubility, poor bioavailability, and rapid degradation under neutral or alkaline pH conditions or when exposed to light, limit the food applications of curcumin. These problems can be solv...

Analysis of different innovative formulations of curcumin for improved relative oral bioavailability in human subjects

PURPOSE The optimal health benefits of curcumin are limited by its low solubility in water and corresponding poor intestinal absorption. Cyclodextrins (CD) can form inclusion complexes on a molecular basis with lipophilic compounds, thereby improving aqueous solubility, dispersibility, and absorption. In this study, we investigated the bioavailability of a new γ-cyclodextrin curcumin formulatio...

Comparative absorption of curcumin formulations

BACKGROUND The potential health benefits of curcumin are limited by its poor solubility, low absorption from the gut, rapid metabolism and rapid systemic elimination. The purpose of this study was the comparative measurement of the increases in levels of curcuminoids (curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, bisdemethoxycurcumin) and the metabolite tetrahydrocurcumin after oral administration of three diff...

Curcumin reduces trabecular and cortical bone in naive and lewis lung carcinoma-bearing mice.

The present study investigated the effects of curcumin on bone microstructure in non-tumor-bearing and Lewis lung carcinoma-(LLC)-bearing female C57BL/6 mice. Morphometric analysis showed that dietary supplementation with curcumin (2% or 4%) significantly reduced the bone volume to total volume ratio, connectivity density and trabecular number, and significantly increased the structure model in...
